Contractor Safety Management: Challenges and Best Practices

Safety leaders across a broad range of industries report that managing contractor safety is often more challenging than managing employee safety. Some of these challenges can relate to a competing tension between a “hands-off” approach and the need to engage more actively and manage through influence. Other challenges may relate to a lack of alignment in safety cultures between contractor and host companies. Despite these greater challenges, it’s often contractors who engage in many of the higher-risk activities and thus have an increased exposure potential for serious injuries and fatalities. This session will examine seven of the most common and most difficult challenges with contractor management. We’ll identify best practices and enhanced approaches to address these challenges throughout every stage of the lifecycle of contractor engagement.
